I specialize in controlling materials at the single-atom scale necessary to create and support delicate quantum states in the solid state. I achieve this through a synthesis-based approach, pushing beyond the limits of natural or stochastic processes to engineer quantum systems in diamond and thin films from fundamental materials science principles.
My research integrates synthesis and processing with quantum measurements to directly feed back on the materials and overcome outstanding challenges in the following areas.
Controlled creation of quantum defects in diamond
We will create group IV spin defects in diamond with controlled coherence, interactions, and spatial localization for applications in quantum communication. By engineering not only the defects but also their local diamond environment, we aim to suppress spectral diffusion and enable opportunities for faster, higher-fidelity entanglement distribution. We will use a variety of synthesis-based tuning knobs to achieve group IV color center creation with precise depth confinement while also improving creation efficiency and charge state stability.
Frontier superconducting heterostructures based on MgB2
We will pioneer superconducting junctions based on high-Tc materials such as MgB2, leveraging atomic layer processing to create precise tunnel barriers and unlock device operation at higher frequencies and temperatures. We will use atomic layer processing to create high-quality, ultrathin insulating barriers, correlating materials structure and composition with low-temperature electrical characterization.
Monolithic hybrid quantum systems in diamond
We will create a unified, low-loss materials platform for coherent spin–superconductor coupling and opportunities for novel hybrid quantum systems by achieving spatially-defined superconductivity in diamond through precision boron doping. By spatially defining superconducting and insulating regions through boron doping, our bottom-up approach will replace heterogeneous interfaces with doping-defined electronic transitions. We anticipate that this platform will unlock numerous exciting possibilities for scalable and coherent hybrid quantum technologies.
