Teaching & Mentoring

I seek to build an inclusive, collaborative environment that empowers students to tackle outstanding challenges at the intersection of materials and quantum science and share in the excitement of discovery that continually drives my own research and learning.

Teaching Experience

Cleanroom training class for CC students Cleanroom training class for CC students

I helped teach a cleanroom training course at UCSB for local students (from community college or outside workforces) looking to get into the semiconductor or quantum industry but who had not had an opportunity to gain cleanroom fabrication skills. This NSF-funded program, called CC-PRIME (Central Coast Partnership for Regional/Industry-focused Micro/nanotechnology Education), features a week of hands-on cleanroom laboratory skills training for cohorts of 10 students. In this course, I guided each student to fabricate their own wafer of micro pressure sensor devices. A few of my students have since landed industry jobs thanks to this experience.

My other teaching experiences include serving as a TA for introductory and graduate engineering quantum mechanics classes at UCSB. I have participated in teaching workshops at the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Outreach at Caltech.

Outreach

Outreach at local schools Outreach at local schools

I am dedicated to improving representation in science, and I hope to be a voice for scientists from all backgrounds in my future career. At UCSB, I served as president of the Materials Student Association (MSA) and a member of our department’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.

I also led a team to develop Quantum Kits of outreach materials for the UCSB Quantum Foundry to bring quantum science lessons and activities into local middle schools. I went into the classrooms and worked directly with a diverse community of students, inspiring them to have confidence to ask questions and experiment with new problems, even when the topic is as complicated as quantum physics.
